Upcoming Voter Registration Deadlines and Why You Should Register Today

Updated: Jul 23, 2025

As election season draws near, it’s crucial to be prepared by ensuring you’re registered to vote. Voter registration deadlines are fast approaching, and missing these deadlines could mean losing your chance to have a say in issues that impact your community, state, and country. Whether it’s local, state, or national elections, your vote matters. Here's what you need to know about upcoming deadlines and why it's important to get registered right now.

Why Registering to Vote is Essential

1. Your Voice, Your Power

Voting is one of the most direct ways to influence government decisions. Policies on healthcare, education, jobs, climate change, and civil rights are shaped by elected officials. Even if some elections coming up seem miniscule in comparison to presidential and congressional ones, town-wide policies can have a big impact on your everyday life. The impact of local elections can’t be discounted.  By registering and voting, you ensure that your perspective is included when critical decisions are made.

2. Elections Shape Your Daily Life

Local elections affect everything from school boards and city councils to policing and public infrastructure. These decisions influence your daily life—whether it's the quality of roads, safety, or local business regulations. State elections impact laws regarding taxes, health care access, and education funding. National elections determine federal policies on immigration, the economy, national security, and much more. A few important local elections are coming up in Tenafly, most notably for two seats on the Tenafly Borough Council. The policies made by local elected officials have a great impact on the everyday lives and conveniences of town, so elections are a chance to shape how your own future life in the town will look.

3. Close Elections Are Common

Elections are often decided by small margins. A few hundred or even dozens of votes can determine the outcome in key races. In recent years, many elections at both state and national levels have been incredibly close. Your vote could make the difference. Especially in local elections, where a good portion of an already small eligible population doesn’t vote, your vote has a huge say in the future of the town.

4. It’s a Right Many Fought For

Voting rights have been hard-fought throughout history. From the women's suffrage movement to the civil rights movement, many individuals sacrificed greatly for the right to vote. Exercising that right honors their struggle and ensures that everyone’s voice, regardless of race, gender, or income, is heard. Voting in any election helps pay respect to the people who fought so hard to have a say in our democracy.

5. The Importance of Being Registered Early

Registering ahead of time not only ensures you're eligible to vote but also gives you peace of mind. It allows time to resolve any issues, such as address changes or name discrepancies, well before Election Day. Waiting until the last minute can lead to unnecessary stress or even disenfranchisement if you miss the deadline. A lot of people don’t vote or register due to not having enough time, but registering in advance is quite easy and doesn’t force you to register under a harsher time constraint in order to meet the deadlines.

Upcoming Voter Registration Deadlines

With Election Day approaching, every state has a voter registration deadline, and these deadlines vary. Here’s a brief guide on how to make sure you don’t miss your chance:

1. Check Your State’s Deadline

The registration deadline in New Jersey is October 15th, which includes registering at local election offices, online registration, and registration by mail-in. If you haven’t registered already, now is the perfect time!

2. Update Your Information

If you’ve moved, changed your name, or haven’t voted in a while, make sure to update your registration. You can typically check your registration status online through your state’s election website.

3. Use Resources to Help You Register

Although TownSquare’s voter registration tool isn’t up yet, there are other quick ways to help you register. Visit reliable websites like Vote.org or the New Jersey election office site for access to registration forms and guidelines. These resources also provide useful reminders and alerts about upcoming deadlines and voting instructions.

How to Register

If you haven't registered yet, here’s how you can do it:

  • Online:

    • Many states offer online voter registration. Visit your state’s election website to get started.

    • Websites like Vote.org also allow you to quickly register by filling in personal information.

  • By Mail:

    • Download a voter registration form, fill it out, and mail it to your local election office.

    • Applications are available for pickup at the Borough Clerk’s office between 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM Monday through Friday.

    • Mail in registration forms are also available at the Office of Superintendent of Elections/Commissioner of Registration in Hackensack.

  • In Person:

    • You can also register at your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), some public assistance offices, or election offices.

  • At College:

    • If you're a student, many universities have voter registration drives, making it easier for you to register locally or in your home state.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

If you miss the deadline, you may still be able to vote in future elections, so it’s worth registering even if it’s too late for this cycle. Unfortunately, New Jersey doesn’t permit same-day registration, which means registering on election day. So make sure to register in advance if you plan on voting!

Make a Plan to Vote

Once you're registered, don’t stop there! Make a plan to vote—whether in-person early, on Election Day, or by mail-in ballot if your state allows. Planning ahead will help ensure you can participate even if unexpected events arise.

Conclusion

Voting is one of the most powerful ways you can impact the future of your community, state, and country. With the upcoming voter registration deadlines, now is the time to ensure your voice will be heard. Take a few minutes today to register or confirm your voter status so you can be part of shaping the decisions that affect us all.

Don’t wait—get registered and make your voice count!
